In the ancient world, the ultimate expression of fire as a weapon of terror and ruin was a near-unquenchable "napalm" called Greek fire - a substance so legendary in its effects that "Game of Thrones" used a fictional version to decisive effect in its own epic (though fictional) Battle of the Blackwater. In truth, the term "Greek fire" pops up all through history to describe several ancient and medieval substances combining various elements. Early versions used pitch, naphtha or sulfur, while Crusaders later faced Greek fire made with saltpeter and turpentine.

The modern Ukrainian state itself, he argues, is a kind of attack on Russia because it divides Ukrainian and Russian peoples who should be united and because it cultivates anti-Russian extremism to justify this division. In reality, Ukraine’s ethnic and linguistic groups have coexisted far more peacefully than Mr. Putin claims. Essentially, the so-called pro-Western civilizational choice made by the oligarchic Ukrainian authorities was not and is not aimed at creating better conditions in the interests of people’s well-being but at keeping the billions of dollars that the oligarchs have stolen from the Ukrainians and are holding in their accounts in Western banks, while reverently accommodating the geopolitical rivals of Russia. Here Mr. Putin extends his historical revisionism into an indictment of modern Ukraine. Its government, he argues, is not a real government but a clan of thieves - and therefore due none of the rights of a sovereign state - as well as an intrinsic threat to Russian security. By couching his case in the supposed illegitimacy of the Ukrainian state itself, Mr. Putin is suggesting that no policy change or diplomatic concession could alleviate this threat. It is, in a sense, a declaration that there is no point in negotiation, that Moscow has no choice but to coerce Kyiv’s leaders by force, or else remove them outright.

France are my tip to easily win this group, but to predict who will finish second is much harder. The other three teams are very evenly matched. They will all be confident that they can progress to the next stage. Here is my run down of the teams. France are one of the big favorites to lift the trophy in Paris on the 10th of July. Soon, the young whiz had developed a way to find oil using sound. Exploration crews would set off underground dynamite charges, and then, using a technique known as autocorrelation, they would measure the pitch of returning sound waves and use the data to pinpoint oil rich areas. Traditionally, oil companies discovered oil at the end of a drill bit. Exploration crews would roam the seafloor and the countryside, repeatedly boring into the ground until they struck something interesting. With Hildebrand's innovation, they could now get a good idea of the subsurface long before breaking ground. By age 40, the engineer had earned more than enough cash to retire. Instead, in the early 1990s, he gathered up his petrodollars and founded Antares Audio Technologies, a quirky music software company in the small California town of Scotts Valley. Hildebrand had learned a lot about sound in the world's oil fields, and with Antares, he aimed to channel that knowledge into the music studio.
