Acoustic levitation allows small objects, like droplets of liquid, to float. Unless you travel into the vacuum of space, sound is all around you every day. But most of the time, you probably don't think of it as a physical presence. You hear sounds; you don't touch them. The only exceptions may be loud nightclubs, cars with window-rattling speakers and ultrasound machines that pulverize kidney stones. But even then, you most likely don't think of what you feel as sound itself, but as the vibrations that sound creates in other objects. The idea that something so intangible can lift objects can seem unbelievable, but it's a real phenomenon. Acoustic levitation takes advantage of the properties of sound to cause solids, liquids and heavy gases to float. The process can take place in normal or reduced gravity. In other words, sound can levitate objects on Earth or in gas-filled enclosures in space.

First, gravity is a force that causes objects to attract one another. The simplest way to understand gravity is through Isaac Newton's law of universal gravitation. The closer objects are, the more strongly they attract each other. An enormous object, like the Earth, easily attracts objects that are close to it, like apples hanging from trees. Scientists haven't decided exactly what causes this attraction, but they believe it exists everywhere in the universe. Second, air is a fluid that behaves essentially the same way liquids do. Like liquids, air is made of microscopic particles that move in relation to one another. Air also moves like water does -- in fact, some aerodynamic tests take place underwater instead of in the air. The particles in gasses, like the ones that make up air, are simply farther apart and move faster than the particles in liquids.|Promotional videos are rapidly becoming a popular medium for persuading people to change their behaviours in many settings (e.g., online shopping, social enterprise initiatives). Today, such videos are often produced by professionals, which is a time-, labour- and cost-intensive undertaking. In order to produce such contents to support a large applications (e.g., e-commerce), the field of artificial intelligence (AI)-empowered persuasive video generation (AIPVG) has gained traction in recent years. This field is interdisciplinary in nature, which makes it challenging for new researchers to grasp. Currently, there is no comprehensive survey of AIPVG available. In this paper, we bridge this gap by reviewing key AI techniques that can be utilized to automatically generate persuasive videos. We offer a first-of-its-kind taxonomy which divides AIPVG into three major steps: 1) visual material understanding, which extracts information from the visual materials (VMs) relevant to the target of promotion; 2) visual storyline generation, which shortlists and arranges high-quality VMs into a sequence in order to compose a storyline with persuasive power; and 3) post-production, which involves background music generation and still image animation to enhance viewing experience.

Our method enables pausing the video at any frame and rendering the subject from arbitrary new camera viewpoints or even a full 360-degree camera path for that particular frame and body pose. This task is particularly challenging, as it requires synthesizing photorealistic details of the body, as seen from various camera angles that may not exist in the input video, as well as synthesizing fine details such as cloth folds and facial appearance. Our method optimizes for a volumetric representation of the person in a canonical T-pose, in concert with a motion field that maps the estimated canonical representation to every frame of the video via backward warps. The motion field is decomposed into skeletal rigid and non-rigid motions, produced by deep networks. We show significant performance improvements over prior work, and compelling examples of free-viewpoint renderings from monocular video of moving humans in challenging uncontrolled capture scenarios.

Now that the war is over, these same experts and others swell the chorus that ‘sea-power won the war.’ One enthusiastic Englishman, for instance, exclaims, ‘Armies are, after all, only the projectiles of the navy.’ There is just enough truth in these statements to sweep the reader into conclusions that are utterly false, and to make of Mahan’s famous phrase, not a scientific principle, but a shibboleth. At the outset, it is impossible to call attention to the difference between saying that sea-power proved decisive and that ‘sea-power won the war.’ The latter statement carries an unjust implication concerning the other forces that may, in fact, have borne the greater burden of the conflict. Thus, it is fair to say that the entry of the United States was decisive, but to say that America won the war would be a silly boast. Mahan says, of the Union navy, ‘Never in history did sea-power play so decisive a part’; yet no one would say that it ‘won’ the Civil War, because the effectiveness of the fleet was wholly dependent on the parallel effectiveness of the army.

The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is a very high energy gamma-ray detector located in Mexico. In late 2018, the HAWC collaboration completed a major upgrade consisting of the addition of a sparse outrigger array of 345 small water Cherenkov detectors (WCDs) surrounding the 300 WCDs of the main array and extending the instrumented area by a factor of 4. It provides an improved reconstruction of the showers whose core and footprint are not well contained in the array and increases the effective area in the range of a few TeV to beyond 100 TeV. This improvement in sensitivity will help to have a better understanding of the Galactic sources that accelerate particles up to the knee of the cosmic ray spectrum. In this contribution, we will show the current status, the performance, and the first results from the HAWC outrigger array. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) is a very-high-energy gamma-ray observatory located at 4100 m altitude on the volcano Sierra Negra in the state of Puebla in central Mexico.

To think a tiny little 1-inch-diameter (2.54 centimeter) organ is responsible for our being able to see the world around us -- all of its color, light and depth. To achieve this miracle of sight, light enters the eye through the cornea and makes its way to the back to the retina, located in the middle of the eye. Within the retina are a variety of rod cells and cone cells that are responsible for seeing color and detail. The retina also contains something known as visual purple, or rhodopsin for those science buffs out there. If it weren't for the brain, vision would not be possible either. In fact, it is the brain that is key to 3-D vision, not the eye. Because we all have two eyes that are set apart, each eye takes in a slightly different view of the world.

Lots of sites that publish regular information have their own RSS feeds, like Marshall Brain's BrainStuff weblog. The trouble with living in the Information Age is paradoxical: There's too much information. It's everywhere. How are you supposed to keep track of all the news, sports, weather and blogs you follow? Better yet, how are you going to do that and find time for work, school and family? If you're addicted to the constant flow of data that we know as the Internet, you're not going to be able to manage it without some help. One way to keep track of it all has grown very popular since its introduction in 1997: RSS. Short for Really Simple Syndication (at least now -- more on that later), RSS is a way to subscribe to a source of information, such as a Web site, and get brief updates delivered to you. When you subscribe, you'll get a feed -- often a series of headlines and brief summaries -- of all the articles published on that particular Web page.|Using your credit wisely is the first step to living debt free. Can you imagine having no debt? What kinds of decisions come with each paycheck when you owe nothing? Your savings account is bursting at the seams, so you can add some more to the world travel budget. But wait, that budget is set for two years of travel already. Your time volunteering and visiting the orphanage you helped fund in Haiti will happen when the kids are on school break, so maybe it's time to put a paycheck or two into the business you've always wanted to start. That could even add money to your money. Set up the family for when you're gone. This kind of dreaming doesn't have to be a dream. Whether you're in a stage of life where college planning is central, retirement is imminent, or marriage and joint accounts are calendar days away, being debt-free is possible. Knowing your debt and your spending can free finances and prevent draining them in the future.
